Did you notice that Facebook and Instagram were absolutely dysfunctional for almost an entire day?

Lots of people DID notice. Many weren’t able to reach people, ask questions, or market their services. Should any social media platform have that much power over your business building efforts?  Over your ability to connect with other human beings?  Hmmm, I don’t think so.

While social media can be a dream, it is definitely not the only way you should build your business!

If Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media platform goes down again, I’m sure it will at some point, you want to have ways to work around it. Let me share a few things to consider. Remember, it’s very risky to build your entire business on any social media land that you don’t own. You need to diversify your efforts to cut down on risk!

  1. Good ole email.  Having an email list that is separated into a list of referral sources, colleagues, clients, and anyone else you need to keep in touch with is critical. You may not have a monthly newsletter but at least in the event of a social media outage you can still contact your colleagues with questions, you can still network with referral sources, and you can still update clients on any events that may be going on.
  2. Person to person. How often do you make a phone call or send an email to schedule time to develop a real life connection with people who could support your business and vice versa? Social media is wonderful, don’t get me wrong, but there is something very powerful about connecting in person.
  3. Giving quality service. It is absolutely amazing and humbling just how much business a few satisfied clients can generate. Focus on giving clients 120% and investing in the tools and resources that will support your ability to do that. Clients will be more than happy to share your gift with others through word of mouth.
  4. Have a website.  When social media is down and people are looking to reach out to you, they might search online for your website. What would they find if they went searching?  Hopefully, they will find your website and a way to contact you!

What are you doing to build you business, outside of social media?
